I listen to quite a lot of techno, but in a more random way than ambient, I’m not really up to speed with what is available! Like most forms of music I tend to prefer the “darker” and more minimal sides of the genre! I find there are a lot of parallels between ambient and techno both when listening and producing.
I also enjoy attempting to make techno. I’ve tried it a few times over the years without much success, but it’s a compelling form of music so I keep trying! It’s harder than it seems, the art is very much in the details!
I’ve never had much techno luck using sequencers and computers, or dedicated boxes like the Digitakt, maybe there are too many layers of abstraction in the way. I probably would have got closer with the Soma Pulsar 23 if I’d have kept it for longer! But the modular feels like a great environment for techno — hands on, lots of modulation and customisation, so I naturally gravitate towards having a go, because it’s fun!
The 4ms Dual Looping Delay is the main tool for the crazy feedback hat/snares and the kicks are getting better now I’m adding envelopes to the pitch — thanks DivKid, see below. I’m starting to dial in this modular oscillator/envelopes/vcf/vca voice building malarkey! :)
Just a beginning from a beginner, but I’m happy how my modular sound design is progressing.
Practice, practice, practice… onwards!
