2025 Mini Review
The best of WHIRRINGS 2025
A year goes by so quickly and yet so much happens! This was a complex year for me, full of ups and literal downs! I started a Patreon, finally left the streaming platforms and stopped posting on Instagram! I wrote quite a bit here on Substack and made a lot of videos, field recordings and music, and I’ve inched ever so slightly closer to making this whole WHIRRINGS endeavour self-sustaining.
Here is a quick tour of some of the things I’m most proud of from 2025:
Drifting Memory Station
Earlier this year I had the opportunity to get to know the SOMA COSMOS effects pedal for a few months—thank you D1G 🙏
Working with inventive and unique music gear has been a great pleasure this year. I took really deep dives into both the SOMA COSMOS and the Hologram Microcosm. I already have a few interesting instruments lined up for 2026.
Sound Objects
I’ve been collecting “sound objects” for a while now. I have a couple of large boxes full of found objects and materials that I can use as “instruments”.
This year I officially introduced my box of “Sound Objects”. Next year they will feature more regularly in my work. I’ve long wanted to explore the lowercase possibilities of just using microphones and objects paired with loopers and effects so expect to hear these kinds of setups very soon in both music and sample packs.
Sounds From The Ether
Yesterday I outlined how I am Supercharging my Patreon for 2026 and one element of that plan is the addition of monthly sample packs.
This year I released my first sample pack Sounds From The Ether — a collection of electromagnetic recordings made with the SOMA ETHER. Next year I will release a new sample pack every month available on the WHIRRINGS Patreon →
Through the Noise to the Sea
Field recording is a broad church. People make and use recordings in many ways for many different reasons.
In June I released a new collection of Field Recordings from Bude, Cornwall and I talked about why I go field recording. Next year I hope to make many more field recordings in wonderful places.
I only released one album of new music in 2025, Brittle Fractures, but it’s a collection that I’m really proud of. Next year I will release much more music, plans are in place!

It’s been a great year on Substack and looking forward to tucking into 2026 with equal gusto! I’m up for taking the sound objects challenge, I don’t have any at the moment but coupled with my contact mic, will be interesting to experiment with.
